Club News - Another very chilly Florida morning. What happened? This has been the coldest winter in eight years that I have experienced in Florida. Rumor has it that all the Snow Birds are coming down and bringing the cold with them. (JOKE! Aaargh!) Glad to have you all back here in spite of the chill. I was reminded that 40s and 50s were not COLD. You need to go back up north to be reminded about cold. How soon we forget. :o))

It was a great event. There were 389 boats and 139 racers over the 3 day event. We met a lot of District 3 racers and certainly plugged our club at any opportunity. There were numerous jaws dropping as we ran these FE boats in front of many of the fuel racers for the first time. ME Time video company filmed the entire event and had a live internet feed during the whole race. There were plenty of interviews given by our club, as they interviewed all the heat winners. The race will be able to be viewed in the archives section starting March 1st. This is very good publicity for our sport. They charge only $25 per year for a premium membership. For a limited time the regular membership is free. Hopefully many in our club will consider joining this new service.

It was a beautiful day (finally) at the pond today. Temperature in the low 70s, low humidity, beautiful blue skies with a very light breeze. After the more than chilly Sundays that we have had for the past month or so, this was delightful. This is what we all came to Florida for. Just had to wait a bit this year.

Some of the younger spectators got a chance to pilot the boats so they were very excited.
Below are a few photos of the activities today. Thanks again to Capt. Bill and Mackey Rodgers for putting the docks together for the club. Great job!

Here is the latest
from the WAVE BLASTERS of FLORIDA
Club News - Beautiful but chilly morning at the pond today. Only 52 degrees and breezy. Long pants, jackets and gloves. WOW! But - NO WHITE STUFF! Up north is really getting hit this weekend.
JUST A REMINDER TECH TIP - Bud ran a load test on the 2,200mAh, 3S, 8C LiPo batteries we have been using in the Futaba and Spektrum radio transmitters. The Futaba 3 channel radio transmitters, for example, only draw about 0.06 Ah (60 mAh) so with a 11.1 v., 2,200 mAh battery, you can "theoretically" expect up to 36 hours of operating time. No need to charge after every use but don't leave it on forever either. A couple more reports of running LiPos too long and dropping the per cell charge below 3v. Very hard to recover a LiPo when it hits that low of a voltage. Frequent recycling of a LiPo takes it toll on the battery life as well. Wait until the 3S LiPo (fully charged 12.6v.) drops to approximately 11.1v. before you charge but NEVER let it go below 9.9v (3.3v per cell).
Fast Electric News - Regular racing today. Below are the results for the SuperVee Novice, SuperVee Stock, SuperVee Modified, and LSH (Limited Sport Hydro). P-Offshore did not race today.
Be sure and check the Fall Season Point Standings on the LINK page of this website. This was the final race for the 2009 Fall season.
FINAL
1st--Ken Haines (825 points)
2nd--Phil Hale (769 points)

December 20th - SuperVee - Modified

2nd--Paul Mainville (750 points)
3rd--Ken Haines (700 points)

Scale/Sail News - The crowd was small and the session was short today. Just too cold to really enjoy the boating. While most of us were in winter clothes, two folks did show up in shorts, short sleeves and no coats. Guess some of us just haven't been in Florida long enough. Guess what though. It did almost hit 70 degrees before the day was up.
With the holiday season brings the decorated boats. George Buchmann had all of his boats decorated but the Bristol Bay was the best. Congrats George on the Christmas tree and all the lights. Looks great!

Scale/Sail News - Lots of tech chatter today as Kris tried to again burn up two more motors on the Rybo Runner prototype. Running dual outboards and a 4,500 mah, 25C, 3S LiPo pack, you could have fried eggs on the battery pack and the motors. It had to be pulling close to 100 amps. Surprised the ESC didn't blow. Can't wait until the next chapter. Really something new every week. (Sorry Kris but!) :o))
Carl Slater and Ron Desmond have been busy modifying Ron's Atlantic Tug. Really looks great with the new crane system and dual water guns. Amazing the mods that can be made to a standard RTR vessel. Really creative - Congrats Carl and Ron!

Scale/Sail News - GB Robbins contacted the Fort Pierce, Florida, Coast Guard Station to see if they had a 47 ft. Motor Life Boat stationed there. GB's interest was to get some first hand information, with pictures and details, for the 1/10th scale MLB that he is building. The Operations Petty Officer informed GB that they did have a 47 ft. MLB and he invited them to visit and requested that they bring a couple of model boats for display.
Capt. Bill, Mackey Rodgers and GB visited the station on Tuesday, November 17th. Upon being cleared (Security), they met with the Operations Petty Officer. Upon seeing the models that GB & Capt. Bill has brought, he started calling other officers which also showed up on the docks. Capt Bill put on a demo of his CG boat with all the bells and whistles so lots of "oohs & ahs". Then a great tour of the MLB stationed there. The other CG boats stationed there are very impressive as well as the crew.
Overall a great trip. We can be glad we have the Coast Guard on duty and ready for any emergency. The visit was very impressive.
Kris brought his "works-in-progress" Miller 70. Coming along very nicely. Kris is doing a great job on the teak and everything on the craft. Can't hardly wait to see it finished Kris.
Think it must have been fleet day for the Wave Blasters Tug Fleet. Seems like everybody showed up. (Ooops! Bud's Target Towing Tug is missing.) :o))

Club News - 2010 TRAIN & R/C EXPO, STUART, FL - The Wave Blasters will exhibit at the Train & R/C Expo at the Martin County Fair Grounds, Stuart, Florida on Saturday, January 16th from 9 AM to 3 PM. We will have eight tables, six for display and two for WB members selling boats or accessories. Many members have expressed an interest in not only exhibiting their boats but selling some items as well so we want to try it this year. Those who sell something during the show will be asked to contribute to the "Dealer Table" additional fee but it should be minimal.
We will distribute a sign up sheet for those who want to put boats on display. We have a lot of interest so will try to make sure we don't get a lot of duplication. In additional to the display table in the front of the booth, we will also have some tables in the rear of the booth that we need to provide. We can place additional items on those tables without additional fees.
The sponsors have also asked if we wanted to conduct any "How To" work shop sessions at the Expo. These should be 15-30 min. in length and obviously focused on RC model boating. Anybody interested in giving a presentation please contact Bud Johansen (WaveBlasters@comcast.net). Think it would be great if we could get a couple sessions on the schedule for the day.

Scale/Sail News - Mackey Rodgers showed up with his latest - A 1907 Steam Launch complete with a dual piston steam engine. He also includes a little bonus power by adding an electric motor in-line with the steam engines in case the steam fails. If you have ever run steam in an RC boat, you would really appreciate being able to recover your craft without waiting hours for the breeze to blow it ashore. Leave it to Mackey to be a real innovator.
Mackey Rodgers showed up with another neat item, a 2 cylinder steam engine complete with fittings and all. Really a beautiful piece of work. Mackey is now looking for a vessel to put it in. Kris Jagdeo also had a beautiful model of a fishing fighting chair complete in every detail from the tilting foot rest to the removable back. Only problem is that it would take an 8' to 10' RC model to keep in scale. Kris has built some large boats but not that size; yet!
